Valve’s Pyrowave codec targets low-latency LAN streaming
The Steam beta adds a Vulkan-based codec designed for very low latency, HDR and 4:4:4 video, trading 5–10× the bandwidth of other streaming codecs. The release is a useful example of a bandwidth-for-latency trade-off in real-time media systems.
- What
- Pyrowave is an experimental, low-latency video codec available in the Steam client beta for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- How
- It uses Vulkan and targets LAN streaming, requiring 5–10× the bandwidth of other streaming codecs; it supports HDR and YUV 4:4:4.
- Why it matters
- Its bandwidth and latency tradeoff matters when engineering high-quality video streaming over fast local networks.
