Rust GPU support could make ordinary Rust code a compiler target
Rust-GPU and Rust CUDA currently provide GPU programming through libraries; Christian Legnitto’s vision is to make the GPU an ordinary compiler target for Rust, with a prototype in preparation. That approach could change how Rust software targets accelerators, though it is not yet fully implemented.
- What
- • Rust GPU support currently relies on libraries such as rust-gpu and Rust CUDA to make GPU programming possible from Rust.
- How
- • Maintainer Christian Legnitto envisions GPUs as ordinary compiler targets for normal Rust code, without special libraries; a prototype is in preparation.
- Why it matters
- • Making GPUs a normal compiler target could let engineers use ordinary Rust code for GPU work, though that vision is not fully implemented.
