TLA+ cannot verify properties you have not specified
The essay cautions that TLA+ can help find concurrency bugs but only checks properties someone has defined; verified designs also do not guarantee correct code. That distinction matters when evaluating formal methods in agent-built software.
- What
- TLA+ describes system behaviors as sequences of states and can check safety and liveness properties.
- How
- Its temporal operators express conditions such as what must always hold, change next, or eventually happen.
- Why it matters
- Formal verification can only check properties engineers specify; it cannot by itself guarantee correct code.
